Compositor francés de origen alemán. Hijo de un cantor, estudió en el conservatorio de París, pero tuvo que abandonar los estudios por falta de dinero. Compuso música incidental por primera vez como director del Théâtre-Français (desde 1850) y en 1855 inauguró su propio teatro, Bouffes-Parisiens, para el que escribió varias célebres obras en un acto. Empezó a componer operetas más largas y tuvo una seguidilla de éxitos, entre ellos, Orfeo en los infiernos (1858), La Belle Hélène (1864), La Vie Parisienne (1866) y La gran duquesa de Gérolstein (1867). Se le reconoce a Offenbach un estilo elegante y fluido con un sentido muy desarrollado tanto de la caracterización de los personajes como de la sátira en sus composiciones. Pasó sus últimos tres años trabajando en su única "grand opéra, Los cuentos de Hoffmann, que a su muerte quedó inconclusa y fue presentada por primera vez en 1881.
